Kerala State Film Development Corporation

The Kerala State Film Development Corporation (KSFDC) was established with the prime objective of facilitating the production and promotion of Malayalam cinema besides developing a cinema culture.

The KSFDC was registered under the Company’s Act on 23 July 1975. A public sector corporation KSFDC has since been functioning in the state.

In order to have a studio complex of its own, the Chitranjali Studio was established. The studio complex comprises a recording theatre and editing, dubbing facility, outdoor unit, laboratory unit, film archives, shooting floors, sets, and gardens.

KSFDC hosts international film festivals, national film festivals. Kerala State Film Awards, Indian Panorama, ever since its inception three decades ago. The Corporation has made its presence felt.

The Corporation received its first national award for recording through the film ‘Elipathayam’. The KSFDC has bagged eight National Awards ad 24 State Awards; thus continuing its dominance and prominence in this field.

The studio has two editing theatres, three dubbing theatres and a sound mixing theatre. The Chitranjali Studio at Ernakulam and Kalabhavan Digital Studio adjacent to the KSFDC office at Vazhuthacaud has facilities for editing and recording. Asia’s second largest shooting floor is at Chitranjali Studio. Facilities have been made within the studio to shoot scenes of police station, court, hospital, hamlet, temple, government offices etc. besides, a/c and non a/c apartments are available in KSFDC’s package schemes.

Kalabhavan Theatre, the first public sector movie hall began functioning at Vazhuthacaud in 1984. In the 1980s and 1990s, Kairali, Sree theatre complexes were established in Thiruvananthapuram and Kozhikode and Chitranjali Theatre at Cherthala.

KSFDC’s Research and Reference Wing started functioning from 1976 itself. Public Relations, Library, Festival, Film Marketing, Film Archives come under its purview. Festival stalls are put up at all festivals. In association with the National Film Archives and led by luminaries like William Greeves film appreciation courses have been conducted. The Corporation takes part in all international film festivals.
