Muloor Smarakam, Elavumthitta

The Muloor Smarakam is the home of "humorous poet" Muloor S. Padmanabha Panicker (1869-1931) situated at Elavumthitta in Pathanamthitta district. The State Cultural Affairs Department took over the house and converted it into a memorial to the poet.

Padmanabha Panicker was born to Muloor Sankaran Vaidyar and Velutha Kunju Amma in 1869. He learnt Sanskrit, Kalari and Ayurveda at a young age from his father. He began writing poems during his childhood and later became famous as a poet, social reformer and orator. In 1913, Keralavarma Valiya Koyi Thampuran honoured him with the title "Sarasa Kavi" meaning humorous poet.

Muloor's works include "Kiratham", "Nalacharitham", "Krishnarjuna Vijayam", "Kuchelavrutham", "Neethisara Samuchayam" and "Sanmarga Chandrika". The work "Asannamarana Chinthasathakam" won the Bhashaposhini Award.

Elavumthitta is situated around 12 km from Pathanamthitta town. Literature lovers and tourists frequent the memorial. Chengannur railway station is about 16 km away and the Thiruvananthapuram International Airport about 108 km away.
